My paintings explore the boundaries between the individual and environment, the porous edges between internal and external states of physicality and awareness. I paint the entirety of a visual or mental energetic field as I perceive it, without separation of form from space, evoking the infinite recomposition of the self through this ongoing presence and rupture of form. Through painting, I want to create an experience of art that feels familiar yet resists fixed interpretation. I aim to create a visual magnetism physically pulling the viewer in closer to the work, catching them in a loop of unveiling change. Up close, individual marks may seem dissonant; yet in aggregate, they resolve into a resonant whole, echoing the layered and relational nature of human consciousness itself.
My paintings are also a deliberate reaction to the rise of the artificial intelligence (AI) systems that shape so much of contemporary culture. My work seeks to operate outside those systems, models, and pre-determined datasets. Instead, I aim to create a visual field rooted in human instinct, immediacy, and impulse. Challenging the technological status quo, I paint from a place with little reference to external information and data. Through painting, I aim to reassert the primacy of human intuition, sensory experience, and the creative nature of our being.

Erica Lorrie is an artist based in Baltimore, MD. She earned her BFA in Painting from Boston University and MA in Medical and Biological Illustration from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Lorrie spent more than a decade as a medical illustrator, technologist, and award-winning artificial intelligence (AI) strategist in international development before returning to full time to her studio art practice. Through painting, she offers an artistic reaction to the rise of AI systems she once helped build, creating visual fields rooted in human instinct, primal energy, and creative impulse. Lorrie’s paintings have been included in various exhibitions on the East Coast and are held in private collections in the US.
